Day 4 – September 6, 2012
Today, after a full American buffet breakfast, we will visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio and enjoy a custom guided tour. The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio (1889/1898) served as Wright’s private residence and workplace from 1889 to 1909—the first 20 years of his career. Wright used his home as an architectural laboratory, experimenting with design concepts that contain the seeds of his architectural philosophy. Here he raised six children with his first wife, Catherine Tobin. In 1898 Wright added a studio, described by a fellow-architect as a workplace with “inspiration everywhere.” In the Studio, Wright and his associates developed a new American architecture, the Prairie style, and designed 125 structures, including such famous buildings as the Robie House, the Larkin Building and Unity
Temple. We will take you to visit and experience the restored site as it appeared in 1909, the last year that Wright lived in the Home and worked in the Studio.
After this wonderful morning, we will go to the John Hancock Skyscraper and Water Tower Place, Chicago’s Magnificent Mile to shop, have lunch and explore! Our afternoon continues with a wonderful treat – a Chicago Gangster tour! The fascination with Chicago gangsters continues today despite the height of the gangster culture having taken place even before World War II. In this tour, Chicago’s Gangster past comes alive! Learn about Al Capone, John Dillinger, and other mob bosses, and see the scenes of their crimes. We return to our hotel and this evening is yours to enjoy on your own.
